Gisela Alonso

Cuba

Ms. Alonso, who received a PH.D in Biological Science in 1979, is a leading Cuban scientist and currently the President of the Cuban Agency of Environment. In that role, she is responsible for the implementation of the country’s environmental policy, environmental management and the performance and projection of Cuban research centres related to environmental issues. Ms. Alonso is an active participant in the Cuban Programme for Facing up to Climate Change and also took part in the National Preparatory Committee for Rio +20. She has also headed Cuban delegations to several Conferences related to UN environmental conventions. She was also part of the First and Second Conferences of Leading Women in Environment (Helsinki 2002 and Nairobi 2004).
